What do people from the other BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa) think of India? by Ma Jingqiu

Answer by Ma Jingqiu:

Here are my views about India as a Chinese person. I have not gone to India and what I say doesn't represent all Chinese people’s thoughts. But it might represent many people’s thoughts.

  • Good at dancing

We often see people dance suddenly for no reason in Indian movies. Such a scene appears in Chinese films very rarely.

  • A nation that can “kaigua”(开挂)

“Kaigua” means one can do something with magic energy such as this famous picture. How unbelievable this is!

Edit: Some reviewers say that it does not belong to India. So I think this may be a big misunderstanding.

  • Long history and huge population

It’s quite similar to China.

  • Most people can speak English
  • Hinduism and Buddhism

Buddhism had a big influence on Chinese culture ever since it spread here. And there are still many monks nowadays.

  • Unfair caste system

How sad it would have been if I was born in a low caste family! Of course I should mention it was in the past. It is certainly different today.

  • The biggest democratic country but not very successful

Well, “not very successful” doesn’t mean they can’t decide their president. What I want to express is that they still have many problems to solve such as poverty.

  • Do well in the IT field

Many American IT companies' managerial staff personnel are from India.

  • Develop fast nowadays

To sum up, there are many similarities between India and China. Both of us have had a very long history and have been invaded by the West. We are close on the map but do not know the other well. We have conflicts but they can be solved. I sincerely wish both of us can lead the world again.
