New Delhi, October 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan (Clean India Mission) on October 2, 2014, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. But the scheme is actually the previous Congress-led United Progress Alliance government’s initiative Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan. In September 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government had approved a proposal that Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan scheme be restructured into Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, according to a government release.
